Drawing Word- Research and Analysis

The brief the first assignment for Illustration and Visual Narrative 

The task about the assignment is to define what illustration means. After that, we have to required to conceptualise for module title, Illustration and Visual Narrative / IVN.

For my first step for doing this assignment, I researched the history about Illustration.
Through the history of Illustration, there were many illustrator in early to mid 19 century, John Leech, George Cruikshank. 
John Tenniel who illustrated Lewis Carrol's Alice Adventure in Wonderland.

Some of the best and most loved art during 19 century and there was a period of Victorian Era and into the present day has been produced as illustration by illustrator.

For example, Waterhouse and Henry Justice Ford, Maxfield Parrish, Edward Hopper. They using oil paint, pen and ink, woodcut to illustrate with a fine arts feel.

There have a lot of illustration work in that time that really impress me. I like the way they express their drawing in illustration with fine art feel. I have an idea seem that a lot of illustration works had done in Victorian Era, so I set up the title is called Victorian Era just wonder to recognise the golden age of illustration.

in other media. 

Illustration is new elements of creativity beauty of the works so that can attract viewers' interest .

Illustration is hand made media such as drawing, painting, etching.

Visual is something that seeing or sight, transform from invisible to visible.

Visual present information in visually tidy and meaningful way, readable and recognisable.

Reserach for Narrative

Narrative is story telling , perspective insignificant, perhaps emphasizing.

Theme and Title: Victoria Era

Concept : Steampunk + Mechanical

Steampunk is a sub-genre of science fiction that typically features steam-powered machinery, especially in a setting inspired by industralized Western civilization during the 19th century or period of Victorian Era. Design my illustration into steampunk concept is taking place in Victorian Era but include advanced machines based on 19th century technology. Steampunk and Victorian Era is can be describe that they have connection for each others.

This is the original drawing. We have to draw it out by line. I'm using different size or thickness of line to create the volume of the object. So, we can analysis all the object from the drawing.

I have improve the line of mist and cloud in the drawing.

All are the warm up drawing by using lines. Some of the drawing is from my imagination and observation.  Turning line into the shape to see how the person look like and apply line shading.

Face Distortion

Reflection from rice cooker and is a bit unclear. I drew it on masking tape to show the different effect of the typefaces.

Toy faces

Those are the combination between human faces and toys. I'm just playing around with the expression of myself and join with my toys together. The final outcome is quite funny and interesting. I think they may become one of the characters in movies.

Word of the week : On top

This building is the top Architecture ranking in the world as the building have a lot of details and crafting. The background is create a cloud effect as well to show the building more contrast.

Word of the week : Chop Chop

 Chop Chop the first idea that came to my mind is expression on the people face. Those are the peoples I drew is from my observation. For example, the expression of the people look chop chop. that means look tired, shocked, daydreaming or poker face.

Emotionally and Sensation

Basically, I'm not going to draw adult for their emotional and sensation. Well, for what I done is I were drawing my niece, just only birth for 6 months. 
Nowadays, I realize that children can express their emotional and sensation on faces easily. Yesterday, I were going to One Utama shopping centre and I observed peoples who around or passed by me.
I swear is hard to find adults' emotional on their faces. As an adult, we know how to hide our feeling from one another. We can control our emotional when we feel sad, angry, or others. So,if we compare with children or kids, is totally different.
Children can express their feeling and emotional easily because they didn't think to much like us. If they didn't get something they want to, their emotional will direct tell us what was going on. 
I can prove that what I observed is true because of my lovely niece.
My niece could say that she is a emotionalist girl. 

 

 There have 2 emotional and 2 sensation from her.

 She was screaming loudly when she see something new in front of her. When she can't get it, she will scream loudly until we give her.

The line i drew in this way is showing the pitch of the sound when screaming loudly.

No matter where we are having our breakfast, lunch, and dinner, she will just sitting over there and keep looking around the foods and drinks with that face.

 Surprise is just like you can't expect something in your life and peoples get surprised, they will feel blur and halt at the moment. Its make people confuse and may think is just a illusion.

Every time we finished shopping, we would help her to shower. Unfortunately, she will crying and sad as she tired and sleepy. She wants to sleep rather than shower.

I drew in curve line is just represent like the water which is dropping. It can recognise when we feel sad, our tears drop from our eyes.

Smiling is mean we have a good mood in that time and we you see through the drawing you can see many smiling face with different angles.

Smiling is always the best. She will smile when we playing with her. My sister will sing a song to her sometime. She will smile and show how enjoyable she is.

For my conclusion, being a baby is really good. Adult will hide and control their emotional just because we care people who around with us and what personality they think we are. 


I used black paper and white pastel just want to show the drawing be more contrast and interesting. When combine together, the drawing look vivid and show movement.
